“The Persistence of the Chowans in North Carolina”
Warren E. Milteer, Jr. presents his research on how local government classifications of the Chowan Indians in eastern North Carolina as “colored” resulted in the overlooking of their continued presence in the area and elsewhere. His work links the legacy of the Chowan Indians to the lives of their colored descendants. He will discuss how his research demonstrates that racial categories are unreliable markers of social cohesion and ancestral connections. Dr.Milteer received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is currently an Assistant Professor of History at Virginia Tech. He received the R. D.W. Conner Award for his article, “Life in a Dismal Swamp Community: Free People of Color in Pre-Civil War Gates County, North Carolina,” published April 2014 in the North Carolina Historical Review.
