African American History Month Celebration continues with our 22nd Annual African American Heritage Day honoring African American Sports Heroes and Leaders on Saturday, February 21st, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm in the Roanoke Chowan Heritage Center at Historic Hope Plantation.
The program will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a buffet brunch. Bobby Williams (Site Manager) and David Serxner (Volunteer Program and Education Coordinator) will provide an overview of a special exhibit reflecting more than twenty years of interpreting the African American Experience by the Historic Hope Foundation.
This celebration focuses on an understanding of the events and personalities of the past and how they have influenced current generations. This year the event will honor the African American sports hero, Jethro Pugh, who passed away on January 7, 2015. A Bertie County native, he was an all-star NFL defensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys. We are also honoring Roy L Bond, Jr., who too was a Bertie County native and head football coach at Berite High School for 12 years.
TRIBUTES TO JETHRO PUGH AND ROY L BOND, JR
At 11:30 a.m. tributes to Jethro Pugh and Roy Bond, Jr., will commence with he unveiling of an historical banner for each of these nationally and state recognized sports heroes and leaders. The buffet brunch will end at 1:30 pm and the exhibits will be closed at 2:00 pm
