Turner Bond Sutton, Ph.D. and Benjamin F. Speller, Jr., Ph.D.

Turner, President of the Historic Hope Foundation, earned his A.B. degree from the University of North Carolina in 1968 and a master’s degree in 1971 and doctorate in 1973 at North Carolina State University. He recently retired as a professor at NCSU. Ben, Vice President and Program Coordinator, earned his A.B. degree from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in 1962 and master’s degree in 1965 and doctorate in 1973 at Indiana University, Bloomington.  He retired as Dean and Professor of the NCCU School of Library and Information Sciences in 2004.  He was a part-time faculty member at San Jose State University from 2004 -2009.

Annie is Bertie County Registrar of Deeds.  She has worked for 13 years in the Office of the Registrar of Deeds.  Phil is the Tax Mapping Project Director.

“John Cale, Purported Indian: A Critical Examination of a Family Legend”

Gerald Worth Thomas, MA, CPA

Gerald is a graduate of East Carolina University, a certified public accountant and a retired federal executive. He is the author of Divided Allegiances: Bertie County during the Civil War; Bertie in Blue:  Experiences of Bertie County’s Union Servicemen during the Civil War; Destitute Patriots: Bertie County in the War of 1812. He is currently working on another volume about Bertie County during the Revolutionary War.

“Bertie County/Roanoke Chowan Migration Stories Panel”

Shirley Chappell Jones was born and reared in Chowan County, NC. Her lineage encompasses the families of Hughes’, White’s, Cales’, and Perry’s in Bertie County. Her primary research has been the Hughes and Cale Families for the past several years.

Jess Anthony has a background and degrees in music and organ performance, but has been the Grant Programs Manager for the Arkansas Arts Council since 1995. He grew up in Arkansas and has family lines that are directly connected with the Hoggards, Gists, Heffingtons and Bradys on his mother’s side. His father came from the Anthonys, the Polks, the Jobes, and the same Heffington and Brady families through another Brady daughter and a different Heffington son. Jess’ mother and father both grew up in the area where the Hoggards, Matthews, and Dilday wives settled in Arkansas.

After years of searching, Joy Thompson’s research of her mother’s White family of West Tennessee brought her back to Bertie County. She is a member of the DAR and the Continental Society of Daughters of Indian Wars, and is a prospective member of The Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia. Joy has contributed genealogical research to the DAR National Library in Washington, DC, and is a contributing author to a forthcoming publication on the history of Henderson County, Tennessee.

Richard S. White’s paternal lineage is to Mordica White born in 1702. His maternal lineage includes the family names of Hardy, Hoggard, Cobb, Matthews, Evans, and Perry. Born in Windsor, he now live in Bertie on part of the farm put together by his Great Grandfather in the late 1880’s. Richard states, “My wife and I cherish this land, the heritage associated with it, and are thankful to be home in Bertie County.”
